Kathryn Regel has been making art her entire life, but it wasn’t until 2019 that she decided to pursue life as a full time artist. A native of Wisconsin, Kathryn earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from the University of Texas at Dallas and currently resides in North Carolina.
Kathryn has always been intrigued by graphite pencil drawings, spending much of her earlier career in this medium. Recently she has been using colored pencils and experimenting with different drawing surfaces and additional mediums such as ink and cold wax, to add complexity to her drawings and to allow her to display them without a glass barrier.
Her mixed media work, art and ancestry, is inspired by genealogy, maps, and old photographs. Some of the works reflect a narrative that was passed down through generations, while others are purely whimsical. By using the old photos taken by her ancestors she explores the idea of bridging time and collaborating with those ancestors to further the story of the photograph, or to create a new narrative entirely.
Do you have vintage photos of your ancestors? Kathryn is happy to create a custom piece of art for you that tells their story. Please contact her directly at kathrynregel@gmail.com
"Kathryn Regel has been described as a weaver of stories; her work, a unique combination of art, memories and ancestry."
